About studying voice
The challenges of the Covid pandemic launched me into designing this site and offering online voice lessons, which has unexpectedly brought the huge benefit of being able to work with students from many different areas.
Who I Am:
I am a classically trained tenor and I have maintained a working voice studio since 1993. Prior to being trained in classical voice, I worked for ten years in the field of popular music as a lead guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, arranger and conductor. As a tenor I have performed over twenty leading and principal roles in opera, operetta, and oratorio, as well as many concert engagements, recitals and events.
How I teach:
I teach technique, with an emphasis on developing a solid vocal foundation. This approach to voice production is especially geared to singing on the stage, (opera, oratorio, musical theater, choral) though I feel that most singers would benefit from this foundational work. Voice lessons usually consist of scales and exercises to build strength and resiliency, and foster the mental/physical coordination required for balanced singing, and then music chosen according to the student's needs and endeavors.
Where to next?
Please use the Contact page to reach out to me with any inquiries about studying voice. Beginning students need as much consistency and reinforcement as possible, and accordingly usually study on a regular weekly basis. Normally I see a potential new student for a one hour trial session before deciding whether what and how I teach feels like a "good fit" for them, and for me as well. The majority of my teaching will continue to be online, with some options for in-person lessons in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thank you!
